Michael loved comedy ever since he was a kid, and his favorite comedy sketch show was “Second City Television” – also known as “SCTV”. He was a regular visitor to the University of California, San Diego library, where he listened to the comedy albums recorded on vinyl. He landed his first job working after school in “The Comedy Store Club”, where he answered the ‘phone calls, made reservations, and occasionally did stand-up comedy performances as well.

After matriculation from a local high school, he moved to Los Angeles, California, to pursue a college education.

He occasionally performed at the local “The Improv” together with his friends Todd Glass and Steve Rosenthal – the trio wrote and produced comedy sketches.

Early Career

Koman was invited to join the “MADtv” crew as a screenwriter in 1999, after one of his and Glass’ plays – “Todd’s Coma” – gained publicity. The manager of one of the actors in it, Fred Willard, sent Koman’s tape to “MADtv” producers, who were looking for a new, young writer.

One of Koman’s colleagues on “MADtv” was Greg Cohen, the former writer for “Late Night with Conan O’Brien”.

Cohen gave Koman a work recommendation, and as a result Koman started writing for this show in 2001. It was Koman who, joined by writers Andrew Weinberg and Brian Stack, created recurring characters and segments such as “Hannigan the Traveling Salesman”, and “The Interrupter”. Koman also created the concept of “Walker, Texas Ranger Lever”, a list of sketches that was the most reprised segment in the show at the time. He wrote the satire “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip”, a comedy-drama series made by Aaron Sorkin as a parody of a “Saturday Night Live”, that he entitled “Studio 6A”, a reference to a television studio owned by Conan located in 30 Rockefeller Plaza.

Koman didn’t work just as a screenwriter on the show. He was a common guest of on-air sketches. One of his most famous performances happened in 2004, when he portrayed an accountant who proposed a silly solution to the ongoing debate on gay marriage. This lead to many controversies, and Koman made headlines in the US media. At around this time, he started working with the writers’ staff intern, Ellie Kemper, who also became a regular performer on his sketches. Another popular sketch that Koman was a part of was the fake iPhone commercial from 2007, which was written with the intent of showing the flaws of the device.

For his contribution to the show, Koman won the Primetime Emmy Award in 2007.

Career after “Late Night”

Koman left the “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” in 2008, after seven years of collaboration. It was this year that NBC wanted to launch “Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien”, a transition that would require the cast to move from New York City to Los Angeles.

That same year, he wrote a few episodes of “The Colbert Report”, but didn’t find himself inspired enough to continue creating for the show.

Instead, he started working as a head writer for his former colleague Demetri Evan Martin’s “Important Things with Demetri Martin”; his co-writer on the show was Canadian comedian and actor, Nathan Fielder.

In 2011, Koman once again joined forces with Weinberg to do the screenwriting job for Jason Woliner’s TV series, “Eagleheart”. Koman remained on the show until it ended three seasons later, in 2014, after which he was invited to write a pilot for the TV series “Nathan for You”. After the episode was completed, he was joined on the show by his sister-in-law Carrie Kemper, and Fielder, and all of them remained on the show until 2017, when Fielder decided it was time to end the series.

Concurrently, Koman was also involved in creating “The Jack and Triumph Show”, as well as its spin-off, “Triumph’s Election Watch 2016”.

In 2017, Koman started writing for Lorne Michaels’ “Saturday Night Live”, and is still writing for the show as of May 2020.

During his fruitful career, Koman has earned nine Emmy Award nominations and six awards from Writers Guild of America. He won the WGA Award for Comedy/Variety in a Sketch Series for his work on “Saturday Night Live” in 2018.

Marriage with Ellie Kemper

Sometime after their initial meeting in 2007, Koman and his co-worker Ellie Kemper started dating.

Markiplier’s Net Worth, Girlfriend, Height. Is Markiplier Gay?

Early life, family, educational background

American Gaming YouTuber, gamer-commentator, actor and comedian Mark Edward Fischbach, was born on 28 June 1989 at the Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. He gained fame through his YouTube channel and personality as Markiplier. He has a native Korean mother and an American-German father, Cliffton M. Fischbach, who served in the U.S. military. Cliffton met Markiplier’s mother while he was stationed in Korea; after they married and Markiplier was born, they moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, to raise him and his older brother, Jason Thomas ‘Tom’ Fischbach, now the author and artist of the webcomic “Twokinds” Although he appears in a few of Markiplier’s videos, Tom usually doesn’t like to be filmed.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CI6BQtfA9i2/

They grew up in a house with a large backyard, close to the woods in which Mark and Tom would often play together. Mark’s earliest gaming memory was when he and his brother played with Tom’s Super Nintendo. Throughout Mark’s childhood, his parents often fought and eventually divorced, which led to them selling their family home, and Mark and Tom transferring to Milford High School from a private school due to financial limitations. Mark said that the transfer was challenging for him as he lost contact with most of his friends, and his new school felt very foreign to him.

Mark broke his left arm due to a school injury on the jungle gym, so found everyday tasks to be rather tricky. The injury allowed him to get to know Drew, a tall redhead classmate who introduced Mark to the high school’s marching band that he played the trumpet for.

Not long after meeting Drew, Mark’s father Clifton met Dee and later married her – Mark has said that she is the nicest person he has ever met. Before matriculating from high school, Cliffton was diagnosed with cancer, which put his plans on hold as Mark wanted to become a game developer, but Cliffton disagreed and argued against it. So Mark attended the University of Cincinnati to study civil engineering, before moving to their medical school program to study biomedical engineering. Cliffton’s health deteriorated, and he sadly passed away on the morning of 4 July 2008; his last words to Mark were, ‘I love you so much.’

Following Cliffton’s passing, Mark continued studying while working several desk jobs, which he found mind-numbing. He began dating, but his mother didn’t like his new girlfriend and kicked her and Mark out of the house, so Mark found an apartment for them, but his girlfriend soon walked out on him.

Three days before the end of the quarter, his supervisor fired him, and at the same time Mark began to feel a sharp pain in his lower right side. He was diagnosed with appendicitis and required an appendectomy, and during the check-up, the doctor also found that he had a large tumor on his adrenal gland, which was removed a few weeks later. Mark’s mother and stepmother helped him recover after his surgeries.

Career

YouTube

Mark bought a camera with the money from his tax refund, and began producing gaming videos and comedy sketches on YouTube under the username Markiplier, as his way of taking back control of his life after his surgeries. Markiplier is a mix between Mark and multiplier, which referred to his intentions to feature multiple characters in sketches on his channel. Mark’s first Let’s Play series was of “Amnesia: The Dark Descent.”

Mark’s most-watched gaming series includes “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” “Slender: The Eight Pages,” “SCP – Containment Breach,” and “Happy Wheels.”

His Markiplier channel was created on 6 March 2012, and he uploaded his first video on 4 April 2012. He returned to university for a brief period, before dropping out to pursue a career in YouTube.

On 26 April 2012, Mark created markiplier2, a second channel onto which he only uploaded Let’s Plays for Minecraft. Some of these videos were re-uploaded to markiplierGame at a later date, and the markiplier2 channel was deleted.

His third channel, markiplierTWITCH, was created on 24 May 2012. He would upload his Twitch live streams to the channel, but hasn’t uploaded anything to the channel since mid-2012.

He created his fourth channel, markiplierGAME, on 26 May 2012, which became his main channel onto which he uploads Let’s Plays, live streams, sketch comedies, vlogs, and animated shorts.

It replaced his first Markiplier channel as there was an issue with Google AdSense which pevented him from getting a partner YouTube account, which is needed to monetize videos; he renamed his initial channel “Please Subscribe to my NEW Channel!” The first channel has now been renamed but only has one video – a vlog in which he explains why he needed to create a new channel. He also renamed markiplierGAME to Markiplier.

In 2014, MarkiplierGAME was ranked number 61 on NewMediaRockstars Top 100 Channels of the year, and the following year he was listed as the sixth most influential celebrity among American teens. He also co-hosted the Southwest Gaming Awards alongside Janet Varney, a voice actor in “The Legend of Korra,” and his year ended with him having a cameo role in YouTube’s 2015 YouTube Rewind, returning the following year.

On 4 September 2015, he appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” along with fellow YouTuber Jenna “MissesMae” Mae, to discuss gaming videos and Let’s Plays after Kimmy attracted a backlash for joking about Let’s Play videos and YouTubers.

In 2016, Mark focused less on gaming videos and more on his aspiring career as a stand-up comedian, and working in an improvisational theatre as he began posting more comedy sketches. That year he won Celebrity of the Year at the 2016 Make-A-Wish Awards, and the following year he won a Golden Joystick for the Best Streamer/Broadcaster category.

On 29 March 2018, Mark announced that his channel had surpassed 20 million subscribers. On 19 June that year, his step-niece Miranda was killed in a car accident at the young age of 19. He uploaded a video five days after the accident to explain what had happened, explaining that he wouldn’t be making videos for a while.

Two days after posting “update,” he uploaded “Special Message from Miranda’s Dad,” which was a video in which Michael, Miranda’s father, thanked Mark’s fanbase for their online support and encouraging messages; he also shared stories about his daughter.

In October 2019, Markiplier announced that after the success of his 2017 Choose Your Own Adventure-style video, “A Date With Markiplier,” he was releasing a YouTube Originals production entitled “A Heist With Markiplier.” The series is also a Choose Your Own Adventure, and has a total of 31 possible endings. He produced the series along with Rooster Teeth, and starred alongside fellow YouTubers including Game Grumps, Matthew Patrick, and Rosanna Pansino.

He has a few alter egos, including Darkiplier, Santa Clause, and a news reporter/journalist named Wilford Warfstache, who has a pink mustache.

When collaborating with fellow YouTubers, he usually plays with JackSepticEye, PewDiePie, LordMinion777, and CinnamonToastKen and a few others. In November 2018, Markiplier and JackSepticEye live-streamed a video entitled “I Won’t Literally Shut Up Until You Subscribe to PewDiePie,” to support PewDiePie in remaining the most subscribed-to YouTuber when T-Series was catching-up with him.

Cyndago

In 2015, Mark joined fellow YouTubers Ryan Magee and Daniel Kyre at his Los Angeles home. Daniel and Ryan are from a YouTube music and comedy sketch channel named Cyndago, and Matt Watson from Kids w/ Problems became the channel’s editor. Once Mark joined the channel, he began appearing in comedy sketches, which usually have disturbing elements and dark themes, such as “The Ned Affair – The Warfstache Saga” and “Danger in Fiction.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CGn7ZZoJR1O/

Sadly, on 16 September 2015, Daniel was found in his room after attempting suicide, and was rushed to hospital in critical condition. The situation caused unrepairable brain damage; two days later, he was taken off life support. Cyndago broke up after Daniel’s passing, and from 17 September to 5 October 2015, Mark went on an hiatus. At the time of the break-up, the channel had fourteen original songs and forty sketches, many of which included Mark.

In June 2016, Mark, Ryan and Matt fell out, and Ryan and Matt created their own channel entitled SuperMega. Mark never spoke up about it until 17 October 2017, saying that he was ‘too much of a boss and not nearly enough of a friend’, and took the opportunity to apologize to them publicly.

Unus Annus

On 15 November 2019, Mark created a joint YouTube channel with Ethan Nestor (CrankGamePlays) named Unus Annus, which means “one year” in Latin. They planned to upload one video every day for a year and then delete the channel along with all the videos.

The channel’s purpose was to encourage people to live in the moment and ‘make every second count.’ Their daily videos consisted of various topics such as food challenges, vlogs and food challenges. They urged subscribers to ask themselves if they are an Unus (what Ethan identifies as) or an Annus (what Mark identifies as). They ended their videos by saying “Memento Mori,” which means “remember that you have to die” in Latin.

On 13 November 2020, Mark and Ethan live-streamed from 12 pm to 12 am to commemorate the end of Unus Annus – the live stream ended with them deleting the channel and videos.

Philanthropy and his Charity Streams

Mark does monthly Twitch streams, which double as fundraising events for charities such as the American Cancer Society, Child’s Play, and others. Each stream has a goal donation amount, which Mark sometimes contributes to as well.

During the live streams, Mark plays slower-paced games and takes breaks in between to speak with fans and encourage them to donate. Most of his streams are solo, but he sometimes collaborates with fellow streamers, and also plays fan-made and multiplayer games with fans.

Forbes reported that in 2017, Mark raised over $3 million for charities through his live streams. In March 2018, he raised almost $500,000 for the Cancer Research Institute, to celebrate surpassing 20 million subscribers by donating all proceeds of his “Tasteful Nudes” Charity Calendar 48-hour sale.

According to Mark, as of April 2018, he and his fans had raised over $3,000,000.

Clothing

In response to high demand, in 2017 he began releasing merchandise. The following year, he launched fashion brand Cloak, along with close friend and fellow YouTuber JackSepticEye. Pokimane, a fellow streamer and YouTuber joined them as a Cloak partner and creative director in 2020.

Personal life

On 4 March 2014, Mark moved to Los Angeles from Cincinnati – so that he could be closer to other content creators and YouTube Space. He still regularly visits his hometown for various reasons and occasions.

He is currently dating animator and graphic artist Amy Nelson, who is known as Peebles online. Amy also grew up in Cincinnati where they met at a gaming convention, and began dating in late 2015. She used to have her own YouTube channel called Planet Peebles, but has since deleted all the videos.
