Early life and education
Marina grew up in New York City where she was raised an only child by her father who is a businessman and her mother who is a lawyer, but actually she spent most of her free time with a babysitter, as her parents were always busy. She started acting while at elementary school after being encouraged by her drama teacher, appearing in her first school play at the age of eight, and from there featured in all plays but one, which she couldn’t attend due to having the ‘flu.
She continued acting at high school, where she also played soccer and lacrosse. Upon matriculation, she enrolled at Northwestern University graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre in 2005.
Career as an actress
She launched her career as a theatre actress in 2005 when she appeared in “Just in Time: The Judy Holliday Story” portraying the lead character Judy Holliday and for her performance, Marina was awarded the Agnes Moorehead Award. She appeared in her first Broadway play a year later in Casey Nicholaw’s adaptation of the play “To Be or Not to Be”, and after that played lead roles in several off-Broadway plays such as “Manipulation” and “Beauty of the Father” among others.
In 2006, she became a member of the Canadian cappella group The Essentials and appeared in the comedy play “Perfect Harmony”.
She actually made her debut film appearance in 1993 in “The Nutcracker” playing The Mouse and Plichinelle, and was in 2006 invited to appear in the short film “Hold”. In 2009, she portrayed Melanie in the film “It’s Complicated” and then made her debut TV series appearance in a single episode of “Law & Order: Criminal Intent”. The year 2010 saw her appear in a single episode of “The Good Wife” and “Damages”, and in 2011 she starred in the episode “Model Behavior” of TV series “Blue Bloods”.
She gained recognition in 2011 after portraying Alessandra Steele in eight episodes of the drama romantic TV series “Gossip Girl” which stars Blake Lively and Leighton Meester and talks about a blogger who reveals the secrets of teenagers living and studying on the Upper East Side.
“Gossip Girl” was a huge hit, and after being praised for her performance, Marina was invited to star in movies “Alter Egos” in 2012 and “Sparks” in 2013, and became famous worldwide in 2014 when she started portraying the lead character Officer Kim Burgess in the action crime TV series “Chicago P.D.”.
The series stars Jason Beghe and Jesse Lee Soffer and covers two groups of the Chicago Police Department – the Intel group and the uniformed policemen. She has been shooting for the series to this day, while she has also been shooting for “Chicago Fire” since 2014, and “Chicago Med” since 2015, portraying Kim Burgess in both.

He started working at O’Melveny & Myers LLP in Washington, before moving to New York City where he worked at Latham & Watkins LLP. He is currently working for Massey & Gail LLP in Chicago.
It is believed that Marina is the daughter of John R. Jakobson, an American financer who died in April 2017, and the court documents confirmed this in September 2019. The financer was allegedly paying for Marina’s nanny, the food she ate and everything she had while growing up, and although he promised to leave some money to her after he passed away, Marina received nothing from his $100 million fortune.
