Lena Gieseke was born in Bremen, then West Germany, on 12 September 1965, so her zodiac sign is Virgo and she holds German nationality. She is a painter and a special effects technician, but better known for being the ex-wife of famous movie director Tim Burton.

Early life and education

Lena was raised in Bremen by her parents who were both artists, thus her interest in art from a very early age, which her mother noticed when Lena was only two years old.

When she was old enough, they enrolled her at the German School of Athens, where she was one of the best students, and upon matriculation, she continued her education at the California Institute of Arts from which she obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography.

Lena continued working on her education by moving to London, England, and enrolling at Lena Wimbledon College before switching to Goldsmith College. In 2000, she enrolled at the Universitat Koblenz in Koblenz and Landau, Germany graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2004.

She enrolled at the University of Georgia, USA in 2005, graduating with a Master of Fine Arts degree in dramatic media.

Lena’s career

In March 2005, Lena began her internship at Perpetual Motion in Athens, Georgia working as a 3D generalist, and although she was supposed to stay there for three months, she was eventually kept there as the bosses were amazed by her skills. However, she left the company in September 2006 and started to work for Method in Motion (Los Angeles) as their 3D generalist. After that, she moved back to Germany to work for Scanline VFX as their scripting and pipeline technical director, leaving the company after three years.

In August 2011, she started working at 3DXcite as their application developer, leaving in 2012 to pursue her PhD which she obtained from the Universitat Stuttgart in 2018. She served as a guest lecturer at Furtwangen University from 2012 to the summer of 2015, and since 2016, she has been working at the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF teaching visual media technologies.

Some of the works Lena is known for include her first comedy movie “1½ Knights – In Search of the Ravishing Princess Herzelinde” released in 2008, “Vicky and the Treasure of the Gods” which came out in 2011, and “When Santa Fell to Earth” also in 2011.

Love life and relationships

Lena met Tim Burton in London in 1985 when they were introduced by a mutual friend at a party – Tim was already somewhat famous. The two married on 24 February 1987, however, the marriage lasted for only four years as they divorced on 31 December 1991, but Lena has been his only wife. After their split, Tim started dating Lisa Marie who moved in with him after two years of being together and although the two dated for nine years, but didn’t marry. In 2002, he dated English actress Helena Bonham Carter, who gave birth to their son William Raymond in 2003 while their daughter Nell followed in 2007. In March 2013, Tim and Helena broke up.

Lena hasn’t married again, but it’s believed that she has been seeing someone for over five years now.

Hobbies and other interests

Lena likes to travel, and has been all around the US and visited many European countries such as Italy, Spainand Portugal. She enjoys exploring new places and cities, and learning about the country’s culture, history, and traditions including tasting their cuisines, with her favorite being Hungary’s spicy food. She is keen on watching movies in her spare time, and some of her favorite actresses and actors are Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, and Jim Carrey, while some of her favorite movies are “The Others”, “To Die For”, and “Cold Mountain”.

Lena has been a lover of animals since she was a young girl – she kept bringing home dogs and cats she found in the streets. She often volunteered at a local animal shelter during her teenage years, and has had several pets including dogs, cats and hamsters. Her favorite sport is ice skating, and her favorite book is “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel.

Timothy Walter Burton was born in Burbank, California USA, on 25 August 1958 – his zodiac sign is Virgo and he holds American nationality. He is a director, producer, animator, and writer, best known for his fantasy movies such as “Beetlejuice”, “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, and “Frankenweenie” among many others.

Tim was raised in Burbank by his father William ‘Bill’ Burton who was a baseball player, and his mother Jean Burton who was the owner of a gift shop.

Tim started creating short films when he was nine years old, mostly shot in his backyard – the earliest film which he has saved is “The Island of Doctor Agor”, made when he was 13. He studied at Providencia Elementary School before enrolling at Burbank High School, and after matriculation studied at the California Institute of the Arts, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1980.

He launched his career by working as an animator at Walt Disney, on movies such as “Tron” and “The Black Cauldron”. He released his short film “Frankenweenie” in 1984, but was then fired by Disney who claimed that he spent their resources on ‘a film that would be too dark and scary for children to see’.

Tim went on to direct and produce numerous award-winning movies, such as “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” and “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”.

One of his latest works has been the film “Dumbo” released in 2019, which follows the story of a young elephant who can fly thanks to his oversized ears.

Tim has won numerous awards such as a Golden Globe for best motion picture – musical or comedy for “Sweeney Todd…” in 2008, and three Saturn Awards one of which was for best fantasy film for “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, and two for best animated film for “Corpse Bride” and “Frankenweenie”.
